Successful experiments in maintaining the stability of highly compressed matter during high-velocity impact events have enabled the creation of weapons that can accelerate projectiles to greater speeds for penetrating multiple targets. Many new railgun-type ballistic weapons have alternate hypervelocity variants that inflict less collateral damage in exchange for the potential to strike more than one target and reach critical systems, or even bore through thick walls to strike targets on the other side. A unique application of this technique was used in the design of the Hypervelocity EM Gauss Rifle.
