Taking cues from Sigix Technology, I've been able to vastly improve the efficiency and versatility of early energy weapon designs. Based on recent prototype tests, cooled variants of these weapons output approximately one-third of their previous heat during normal operation, and can be overloaded with a dual burst of energy for twice as much damage potential. However, use of this feature would have to remain situational, as there is a small possibility of severe negative side effects. Overloading a cooled weapon also generates three times as much heat per shot, but that puts it on par with the original design and is often worth the significant damage boost.
