In the early game they can cause a lot of trouble by picking up salvage from your fights before you are safe to collect items. If you target your fire upon a Recycler, it will run away. It can be an effective strategy to turn off all your weapons except for one (so as to minimize firing time) and shoot at a Recycler mid-battle, potentially saving your items. If a Recycler does collect something you need, you can try to kill it as they drop their items on death.
