artifact other than the obvious effect? Trying to figure out if it is just a joke item or if it's worth trying again under some other circumstances without having to throw any more late-game runs because of the obvious effect.

Nope, no special uses (at least not currently, though nothing is definitely going to change there). Many people think it's a joke on first contact, but in the right hands (and knowing exactly what it's doing) can actually be very powerful. It can do a good job of saving your life, or messing it up, depending on your build and circumstances

Some people do intentionally use it. Although more often than not I think people want to avoid it, that's another reason to maybe not risk attach ID-ing prototypes.
