[10.2]Infinite score farming exploit in mines
« on: March 01, 2021, 12:36:50 AM »

There's nothing done against attacking non-combat bots in the mines (at least the -8 one) as long as you don't interrupt construction process, allowing infinite score farming.
I got influence to over 5500 without a single combat bot emerging. (By the way, stat dumping can be exploited to deduce your influence.)

Yeah this isn't a bug, was just allowed to remain that way from the beginning as a minor thing that no one doing serious runs would do considering how boring it is, and players who take advantage of something like this to achieve and submit a very high score are just banned from the leaderboards though, so... not really recommended, anyway :P

Still, Beta 11 is already addressing a number of repeat scoring potential sources that can be theoretically exploited with brute force, just to help save people from themselves. Not sure if this one is in the batch, but some changes are coming.

Yup, if you want to.

I think all infinite score exploits should be removed, because i think there's a problem with the (current) method to deal with submitted scores :

At what point does a submitted run that uses an infinite score exploit deserve to be banned?
If someone gains a 100 points that way, is it enough to ban? What about 200? 300? 500? 1000? 5000? 10000?
Whatever number may be the answer, it'll be arbitrary, which leads to at least one problem :

If the number is too low, someone might go past that number without trying to;
If the number is too high, someone that wants to improve their leaderboard position may feel forced to farm points to near that limit because it's the easiest way;
If that number limit only applies above some rank in the leaderboard, then it's unfair to those below that rank;
If you keep that number secret, the first and third problems still apply the same way, but the second applies in a way subject to the unexpected hanging paradox/surprise test paradox;
Because it's arbitrary, it's frustrating/scary.

In this case, the current method also poses the following question : Why doesn't 0B10 do anything, especially considering 0B10's current responses to other bots?

Well like I said some changes are coming.

At the same time, you're talking in hypotheticals that we haven't really seen come into play. Cogmind has had leaderboards for six years now, with many thousands of different players participating, and we haven't had an issue with this. Honestly a few hundred points is nothing and will go unnoticed. Thousands? Seriously no one cares at all if you are somewhere down in the middle of the leaderboards. 500,000 points is a different story :P. Anything near the top of the leaderboards is all that people care about, and you're not going to get there via infinite cheese farming unless you do what everyone will agree is an extreme amount of it, and those scores and scoresheet details get extra scrutiny.

Remember that Cogmind is super niche and not some mainstream game that is more likely to run into issues with this sort of thing. I personally know everyone in the top 30 on the leaderboards (and many many past that, too xD).

Note that score from destroying the non-hostile bots in 0b10 is capped on a per-map basis as of Beta 11.
