I'd be happy with just a "#" equivalent from crawl which is basically "pretend game has ended and print what the current scoresheet would look like at this point to file". Unless it's listed somewhere I'm unaware of it's very hard to keep track of achivements that require certain miletones to be hit e.g. x damage with weapon type, x bots killed etc. etc. This would allow the more hardcore players to build their own level by level graphs comparisons and graphs without too much effort development wise. Also verbosity options for the HTML log. The turn numbers are wonderful but I believe it only shows players picking up/dropping items, and not what they have actually equipped? Combat log in there would be nice as well. Despite it's oddities it'd be better than the current ~25% of lines that are just informing of things being penetrated by anonymous slugs.

A slightly related problem is being able to identify prototypes based off leaked information while inspecting them. I can tell what a thing is gonna be before I scan or equip most of the time by just examining it and looking at the mass.l

Still sane, exile?

I really like the search and destroy idea. Perhaps branchless with a singular exit in the centre of each map but you must defeat the 4 garrisons strong enemies stationed in the corners of the map before it unlocks. Plenty big pool of bots already designed to choose from... would be fun to get a chance to fight heroes and protovariants and certain other bots that are not normally hostile or not accessible by a lot of players.

My most wasted challenge mode would be something akin to worshipping Xom in DCSS. The negative effects and mechanism are already there via corruption etc., there justs needs a suite of positive of positive effects to balance it out (items falling from the sky, robots suddenly getting confused and doing strange things, mutations and general mischief when it comes to Cogmind's physical and mental state etc. etc.) and also a capricious godlike figure to taunt you and encourage you throughout the run

IME using 32-bit WINEPREFIX and WINEARCH are much more likely to get things running smoothly. I had a number a programs I had issues with until I did this. I believe I had to use winetricks as well for certain things. I've only used debian and arch based distros so I can't help with any tips that might be related to the way SUSE does things.

Oh dear... just as I thought my parser was finally 95% into line with the painful document structure required for MongoDB query performance.  8)

I've a love-hate relationship with the scoresheet so I can't really make any useful criticisms about it. Map of death screen would be cool I guess.

The big want for me would be having the HTML log export including absolutely every message received anywhere, as well as highest verbosity combat log data.

Feels redundant man :( Ah well at least I got motivated to learn a bunch of new tech (Python is comfy.. I wanna nerd about with all the data science stuff it's being used for these days, Parsing with lexical analysis is way cooler than driving yourself crazy with regexp, and if I ever work with NoSQL dbs again it won't be with Mongo heh.

Ok run I guess... nice to get this far with an average speed < 100 playstyle/build. Got to try out Storm Laser which was pretty awesome while it lasted. Despite evolving 4 weapon slots most of the important killing was facilitated by Quantum Capacitor + best energy cannon/other offense processors and utilities. Coolant Injector style heat sinks are broken good... they also feel pretty necessary when wasting 4 slots on Adv. Heat Sinks fails to keep heat at acceptable levels. I think my biggest mistake was barely spending any time on -2... I should've spent more time there trying to build up a Zionite army or at least stock up on launchers + armor and other defensive utilities. Regardless I managed to fight my way through about 1/3rd of -1 before a group of 6 Hunters overwhelmed me. I had pretty bad luck with Garrison placement. I know there are typically 4 on each Factory level, but how many are on -1?

I was 95% sure I wasn't gonna make it through that second depth of -5 Upper Caves alive so it was an easy choice. If it was heading to Zh though I would've gambled on that 5% because I'm pretty keen to progress along some pathways down there that have eluded me thus far :3
Treads life is tough sometimes but it often ends up producing my most thrilling and exciting runs... in fact I think I'm gonna start another one now  :)

Started out aiming to play treads/combat, which meant I often had no intel on stairs and often had to take a staircase because the situation on the current level was starting to get out of hand. This happened in -7 Factory which led me to -7 Storage ("Oh dear I don't want to be here."). Actually did quite a good job of fighting my way through Storage due to quickly finding a bunch of prototype launcher stockpiles. Again things were starting to rapid fall apart as I was nearing the exit... until I found a batch of 6 Troopers behind a door that had already been opened. I figured I'd have to rewire them, so I attempted that not realising I had my Axe activated. I axed one of them and apparently that scared the rest of them into my servitude :p
Again -6 Factory getting too hot left me no choice but to head into Extension. I found A7 right away and it + my Guided Missile Launcher scrapped our way through to the Cetus entrance (using the trick of digging/exploding a path along the top so we didn't have to go down to fight the Behemoths). Speaking of allies not being much help... I've noticed with A7 or purple allies in general, you can get them to disengage from combat and follow you if you lead them towards where you want them to go (in this case A7 and I went through our exploded top-side path and let it cave in on all our persuers). Cetus guards went down surprisingly easy with Guided Missile Launcher depsite their resistance... and then building Enhanced Grunts let us make our way through Hub to -5 Factory without too much trouble (I didn't want to go to Hub... I thought the staircase locations were always the same but I guess not haha). Ended up in -5 Upper Caves again not having much choice in the matter. Once I realised it was leading to Warlord I decided to just take the easy exit back to -4 Factory. Found a quick exit into -3 Research but was again forced into an early staircase... knowing my luck it was -3 Armory ("Oh god not again".) My hopes were very low given my state as I enterred.


The rest of the game was just a scramble to get away from enemies and try and get back to a reasonable state so I could progress normally but alas I got cornered 4 or 5 times in -2 Research and it was all over. Very fun run despite my lack of predominance for the majority of it.

My best game of Cogmind yet! 15,000 points higher my previous highest (exluding challenge modes). Also my best win speed bonus (9000 turns) I never pay any attention to turn count so this was a nice surprise. Don't open the spoiler item at the end of the list unless you are fairly familiar with late game specifically Q.

Highlights:
  • -8 felt like it was a special branch like S or A in terms of loot quality, found so many stockpiles of launchers and high rating weapons and propulsion of all types. Took 3x Medium Reactive Plating off a hauler which prompted me to switch to treads (was building towards hover until this point) which did an amazing job of keeping me protected.
  • Took some serious battles in -7 which left me on core propulsion for the majority of:
    -6/Factory
    -6/Lower Caves
    -6/Lower Caves
    -5/Factory
    -5/Waste
    -5/Factory (discovered 2 exits: *Fac / [*Upp])
    -5/Upper Caves
    -5/Upper Caves
    -4/Factory
    -4/Upper Caves
    -4/Upper Caves
    -4/W
    -3/Proximity Caves
    The hero part was a Katana I had at the beginning and managed to keep all the way until -3 Proximity Caves (it had less than 10 integrity on it for a good portion of these levels). Depth 4 Exit core remaining was 9
  • Entering -3 research with only just enough weaponry to survive fighting a single sentry to get access to a hauler. The hauler dropped 6 flight arrays, and his engine and large storage at almost full integrity. Not long after I started to feel like I had a chance instead of being a cripple for the rest of the game.



  • Stumbling into Q with a decent setup and discovering a lot of new items and lore. Reckless usage of a particularly powerful weapon left me in a bad state entering -1 however.

    Pretty sad about this death :( I ended up in a long deadend corridor shortly after entering -1 and then two Hunters followed me down it. I tried to juke them around the entrance to the room I was in and run, but I failed to notice the shield generator I had equipped for some damage reduction as I ran put me over the weight limit so I was moving at ~80 instead of ~30. By the time I realized, I'd taken a few hits and lost my Terrain Scanner and a flight unit and everything fell apart pretty quickly after that. Scariest part was -8 though. I swear I encountered over 50 enemies before I'd even explored a quarter of the map. That section of the map was a gauntlet with only a single path leading to the rest of the level. I was seriously shocked at the enemy density :o

    Somehow I got way better at this game overnight haha. For the longest time I'd struggle to make it past -4, but since Beta 1.2 I can pretty consistently get to -1 except those runs where you have terrible luck in materials/caves and get destroyed by Swarmers lol. Probably comes down to me always ditching the combat style I wanna play as soon as I find a stash of flight or hover units in Factory :p

    EDIT: Oh yeah had a stressful moment in -4 as well. I was making haste towards the exit that I'd already discovered through data intel, taking the shortest path by chopping through all the walls with a Spear... unfortunately I wasn't paying close attention and ended up oneshotting a Nuclear Reactor that I thought was just useless machine in the way. Miraculously I only lost two hover units and suffered minimal damage to utilities... and found a better hover unit in the next room :)

    I need to learn to start carrying matter pods or recycling units... either that or be a bit more mindful of the state of my matter reserves (some discipline regarding part swapping would do wonders...), I often have runs fall apart because all of a sudden I run out of matter and can't equip something vital then die scrambling around trying to find a solution.

    Maybe a mode where your parts cannot be destroyed? I know this totally ruins the balance and a can't think of a good drawback to balance it out, but it might be a good "super easy casual mode". I guess maybe this kinda direction is gonna be covered in the difficulty levels you are implementing? (I think I heard something about easy mode parts having much more integrity)

    Another idea would be some kind of mutations (dcss style) challenge mode where when it's active, there are consumable items or special terminals spawned that can be used to give you a mutation that can range from devastatingly bad to amazingly good and everywhere inbetween. If you think this is a possible good idea I can brainstorm up a mutation set that could be drawn from.

    Some kind of mode that makes acquiring an army of allies much easier? Perhaps if you take out most of a squad the remaining bot would surrender? Or you're equipped with a permanent datajack that has a much higher chance of assimilation?

    Got interrupted during my attempt and didn't come back to it for like 4 days so I had nfi what was going on really. Just derped my way into Zion and assimilated the bot that runs the teleporter 'cause it seemed like a good idea. Had to fly outta there while the zionites pulled makshift axes out of the wall and the Zion backup Grunts I accidentally summoned dueled with the Mutants near the imprinter. My teleporter ally didn't make it, chopped down by his own people. tl;dr don't play Cogmind while delirious from overheating in a stuffy room at like 38C, dehydrated and sleep deprived  ???

    Pretty terrible run, kept bumbling into squads, fighting them, attracting more squads, then fighting them too. Died getting corned in Lower Caves after I got swamped in -7 and had to bail into the nearest stairs. Normally I'd be about 4 levels deeper with this number of Robots Destroyed lol.
