Alpha 2c!The Weekly Seed is open to anyone. High scores are not the only feature of the runs and the main reason for putting this together is to share our experiences, stories, and tactics over the course of your run. Some
super secret achievements will be selected with some RNG at the end of each week from my steadily growing list. Please leave suggestions for the naming of next seed or other achievements to include to my list
once you have finished your run!Rules are as follows:
- The Weekly Seed begins from the date this thread is posted and lasts exactly seven days.
- Make sure you are running the correct version of Cogmind (see thread subject).
- Enter the seed and abort your current game to initiate the seed (more details are below).
- Verify you are not running the tutorial and that the screenshot below of the Scrapyard and Level -10 matches your seed (note: [Manual seed applied: AlwaysRun] should display in the log window).
- Play through the game once. This is a friendly competition, we are all honest people.
- When finished post your scoresheet here (it should be the newest file in /scores) and any other screenshots/stories/strategies you wish to share with the community.
- Due to the spoilerific nature of this thread do not read the comments if you are intending to participate and haven't played your run!
- Any scoresheets submitted after seven days will not be included.

Still pretty new to all this, but gave it a shot! Ended up not stocking enough engines and running out of energy. Enemies kept picking me off while I ran around trying to get a ion engine before the scavengers. :)

I tried a few things a bit differently this time round.
I've been noticing here and on reddit some discussion about the difficulty in the early-game so I decided to try some tactics that I thought emulated what people might be doing. I'll go over my setup, my
short game, and then make a list of tips that might help new-comers and long-time sufferers.

The start of this seed was very different to the last and I tried for the first time to use the tiles for the whole game. This caused me some confusion at times and I was regularly checking/missing items. I also played in a smaller font than usual (14/Cogmind) and found it very difficult to tell the difference between some Utilities and Power Units. I'll be interested in going over the score sheets at the end of the week to see what fonts other players are using and whether they are using tiles.
To the game! There was a cache of ECM suites which I used to great effect in evading grunts and swarmers so I thought I would try sneaking and hacking terminals. This proved to be a bad idea. As I progressed through Level -10 it felt like everywhere I went there were more and more enemies I needed to evade until I finally had to try and defeat them all at once (two squads of Swarmers and one squad of Grunts). Through good positioning I was still running, but I had lost my Power Unit and even though I destroyed every service robot I saw, none seemed to drop a source of energy. Looking at the image below I imagine I was mistaking Ion Engines with the ASCII version of Propulsion Units.
I found the entrance to the Mines early and thought I would keep looking around for the exit to Level -9. I had searched everywhere except for an spot to the bottom left due to the squads hanging out there. I lured them out, hid in a couple different rooms and let my ECM Suite do its work. I managed to lure two squads of grunts out, but when I went in I was spotted by a squad of Swarmers. I found the stairs I wanted around the corner and was pretty sure that at my current core health I wouldn't make it. I unequipped an item to increase speed, but by then one of the Grunt squads I had lured earlier rounded the corner. I was two tiles from the exit before they took me down :(

Here are some tips I think might help for people who find these situations familiar in the Materials Levels (-10 to -8). All the screen shots are from this seed:
Stand your ground
- Your positioning doesn't make a lot of difference if you have a line of 10+ hostiles waiting their turn to have a shot at you. Chances are if you keep running you'll find another squad bearing down on you
- When you see a squad pull back to the nearest doorway (it's fine to get hit a little while getting into position), sit one space to the side and wait for the enemies to file in
- Don't move! Every time you move you lower your accuracy and potentially allow more robots into the room, ruining your position! Just stand your ground and keep exploding robots
- There are occasions where you'll have to reposition again
Know your exits
- There are some tell-tale signs that you have found the Mines, but it isn't always this obvious
- Mining gear outside is a guarantee that you have found the Mine entrance. The Mines are fun for a challenge and you might find some cool gear, but they can be death-traps

(https://i.imgur.com/qsK0MBS.png) - If the spacing looks weird, or the exit is across the hall from where you started it will most likely not be the exit to the next level up
Kill Haulers (most of the time :) )- There's cool stuff inside them (usually). It's like an early Birthday present and it makes you feel like a big man/woman :)

I recommend trying the seed again if you died very early to try things a little differently. Unfortunately, I'll only include your first run.

What went down:
Spoiler
The run started real well. I had 2 armored wheels, a high capacity storage unit, tons of light cannons, armor, I was ready to roll. Jimmijamjams is right: always be blowing up haulers.
He's also right about the mines. I found the exit, didn't pay attention and realize it was the mines, instantly got pincered by grenadiers and derelicts, died horribly. What a pathetic run.
My highest score yet with a full combat no-holds-barred attack build, but didn't quite get as far as last time.

000 - Found the stash of cannons, then did a direct terminal hack for the Grenade Launcher schematic, and was able to build one for myself right around the corner. I think I'll be set until the Factory ;)

The launcher made short work of the few Swarmer squads I met, and everything else fell to cannon fire. Basically breezed through Materials... This time I'm going full combat treads all the way, and doing a lot more terminal hacking than usual, just to get any extra benefits from direct hacks that I can.
I did lose the launcher on Materials 3. Hoping to come across another launcher soon, or maybe just build one if I find a fabricator.
001 - Found a new Missile Launcher in -7/Factory. Perfect fit for my armored beast.

004 - Still no exit, but I'm feeling so damn powerful with these treads I attached a second Hcp. Storage Unit to tote around even more armor and weapons. It was getting annoying having to pick and choose at every turn. And for when things get really messy I've got a Smartbomb Launcher.

005 - Getting in heaps of trouble annihilating everything I see in -4/Factory. Finally forced to pull out Smartbombs to hit the Carrier squads that just unloaded around the corner here. Have completely run out of armor :'(

006 - And I just didn't quite find the exit before falling to repeated assault squads, but from my score you can tell I really gave them hell. I think I should've gone with my plan to go for some armor schematics around the mid-game, just so I could fabricate some to fill my inventory if I was getting low and couldn't find any.

That turned out to be a really cool seed though. I don't know where I went wrong. I guess an engineer saw me and sounded the signal. It was all down hill from there :(

Yeah, you really should stay away from wheels unless there's no other choice--they're a last resort (easy to find) that get blown off quite easily!
And lots more events like that will be coming with the introduction of more story aspects in the future, though most all of that will be in the branches (like you found in Storage).
@feeblethemighty: A respectable run for just beginning. Looks like you had a pretty good peak setup there. Surprised you had power problems, but maybe you were trying to fight using energy weapons and didn't have spare power?

Very nice peak build! That's kinda the way I normally play when I'm going with a leg-based combat loadout, but I was trying for something slightly different this time. Seems like you could possibly get by with one less power and one less leg at that point, though, giving space for more utilities. (You might end up a bit overweight, but that's not too bad with legs.)

Really helpful guide, there. Cogmind is new enough that there's still a lack of text guides when it comes to strategy. After this seed we should copy that over to the strategies board. There's still quite a bit more that has gone unsaid, too.

WAS VERY HEAVY! I couldn't get anything else that was decent.
After I thought on it for a while I realized my problem was probably spending too much time hanging around or trying to fight when I could have easily ran. I was expecting some better gear; I was really hoping to go hover. Should have shed some weight and GTFO'd
Edit: For more context, my build was lighter at first, but I ended up drawing way too much attention. That lead to loading a bunch of armor/heat sinks and large weapons. In the end I was losing resources too quickly to sustain myself. I got lucky at one point and killed everything off and got to run away, but ran head first into a defender and then reinforcements arrived. It was a sad day.
Hover can work really well, it's just often harder to find the parts since fewer robots use them, unless you enjoy confronting Programmers ;). Producing your own at fabricators might be a better alternative. I've enjoyed the times I was able to hover effectively, but I don't usually aim to do it--it's more a result of opportunistic looting of Programmers when I don't have enough left anyway.
If you're trying to go light then you do want to spend less time in a given area. Other players also tend to use ECM as well (there was a stockpile at the beginning of this seed), and run circuits to throw off pursuers.

I must have missed that ECM cache, I may replay this seed a couple times because I know there were a lot of opportunities for good gear. I think I just didn't think this run through very well.

I tried to go for a more shooty build this time, and while I didn't necessarily get very far I think that I did pretty well. I tried out treads for the first time this run and really liked how they freed me up to put almost all of my evolutions into weapons and utilities.

That's
one of the purposes of the Mines, to give an alternate escape route if you're encountering real trouble early, but sometimes it still doesn't work out for you, depending on the situation down there ;)

A very good run for an early try at combat! The difficulty starts to rise a good bit around -4/-3 when you're taking everything on. I'm going to buff treads a little more in the next release; they're a lot of fun.
Yeah, it's an absurd amount of fun to just blow everything that you come across up.

As someone who tends to use a lot of wheels, I use them cause I thought they were fairly balanced movement speed and support (albeit with low integrity, which can be a pain). But when the creator of the game says they're a last resort, well, I guess I better change my tactics! :P
Hehe, well, just yesterday while working on trap mechanics I again looked back over the propulsion stats and did notice the appeal of wheels in terms of that speed-support balance.
In my opinion their main drawback--that they're the easiest type of propulsion to lose--is pretty serious since you can easily be stopped in your tracks and the whole point of propulsion is to keep you moving. That said, if you don't mind always carrying a lot of spares and shooting up non-combat robots, keeping yourself wheeled up is possible... I prefer something that will either 1) reliably allow me to outrun most pursuers or 2) not fall apart when the shooting starts!

Ha, that's okay, it can still be good practice and learning experience to play old ones and see what others talked about. Or even play the same seed multiple times and try different strategies while having a bit of a leg up. That's how some players learn :)
Plus the "latest one" might not always appear quite as obvious because of the way it appears in the board after I pin it... I'm on the fence about doing that.
... and yeah apparently you died in the Mines like many others on this seed :P. As a new player you'll want to learn how to generally avoid those on seed runs.
