Kyzrati said on reddit that the broken stairs are the ones that glow softly. It's awful, I know. What's more awful is having to bait Guardians off stairs by letting them shoot you just to even SEE if it's a good staircase...

He also said he's going to be removing them completely in the next version, at least until they work.

It was a rude awakening. But that how it goes. I actually managed to get away from these guys I still died, cornered by pests down in a side passage.

If it makes you feel any better about that run, ozy, know that going through those stairs does not evolve or repair you. It just takes you to a different map. All currently missing maps are branch maps, so none of those exits will restore your integrity. (Though still they might be an opportunity to rebuild and find a different exit, it's true.)
