This week's seed: Candy Cane


The Weekly Seed is open to anyone. High scores are not the only feature of the runs and the main reason for putting this together is to share our experiences, stories, and tactics over the course of your run.

Rules are as follows:

  • The Weekly Seed begins from the date this thread is posted and lasts about seven days.
  • Make sure you are running the correct version of Cogmind (see thread subject).
  • Enter the seed and abort your current game to initiate the seed (more details are below).
  • Verify you are not running the tutorial and that the screenshot below of the Scrapyard and Level -10 matches your seed
  • Play through the game once. This is a friendly competition and we are all honest people.
  • When finished post your scoresheet here (it should be the newest file in /scores) and any other screenshots/stories/strategies you wish to share with the community.
  • Due to the spoilerific nature of this thread do not read the comments if you are intending to participate and haven't played your run!
  • Any scoresheets submitted after seven days will not be included.
  • Good luck!







HOW TO ENTER A SEED

Press F1 to go to the MENU, select OPTIONS, select Seed, and enter this week's seed:




Select GAME, select ABORT:




If you have followed the steps [Manual seed applied: Candy Cane] should display in the log window.

Decker

Pretty clean combat win, even though I was playing for score.

I reached alert level 5 on -7 (rampage). The AI response was rather tepid, perhaps because I had destroyed two garrisons. I went on another rampage on -5, then reset the alert level.

I played more conservatively on -4 and beyond, but I still got caught on high alert level. I created a bit of chaos after finding the exit on Access, then escaped. Those terminators really hurt!

With the propulsion change, I hope this will be my last build with 1 power source, 3 storage units, 2 heat sinks and 3 weapons. I think it's optimal for this version but it leaves so little room for creativity.

Action!

Early game was easy as usual, though I should've spent longer in Materials to find a storage cache--ended up playing most of the game with the same Lrg. version I happened to pick up early on. Would have been nice to go with my regular lone Hcp.

Mid-game I came upon an unlocked entrance to Extension, so I took that route like last time, rescued O7, and built the allies which escorted me through another couple floors.

Then by the time they were all gone, -4 was where things really started to go south.

My alert level was spiking like crazy in 4 and 5, and I barely made it out alive, much less with any parts. So I was scraping together a defense for Research, and got chased down and beat on by several Grunts and Programmers, from whom I fled to a nuke I saw in the distance.

Mostly naked I picked up the nuke and it immediately misfired from all my corruption, a direct hit on the group that was following me. Destroyed half of them with that free shot and the other half went down with my second 8)

Then while I was picking up the pieces (not much left...), bracing for my inevitable death on -3, some friends showed up and pretty much turned the floor inside out. Apparently I'm the first player who got to see that happen. (Don't watch the video if you don't want to spoil it!) So I had plenty of opportunity to reach -2 completely rebuilt, but after roaming around for quite a while I had to flee naked again.

On -1 I did have an amazing launcher (and not much else...) which was sucking enemies into black holes, but that wasn't leaving anything for me to rebuild with :(. So I spent most of the time on that floor flying and hovering away in hopes of finding a great cache before finally being cornered without any matter... (damn Terminators!)

As you can see in my sheet, at my build's peak I had an Exp. Thermal Converter feeding my Adv. Force Field, which was a pretty awesome defense. I started with lots of weapon slots in the early/mid-game, then added utilities and propulsion as I could no longer support more weapons given what I had anyway, and ended up with a pretty well-rounded slot distribution.

I'd say that for 75% of my games, I cannot meet my storage needs by the end of the game. Hoarding at the beginning is important when it can be done (and often it isn't, due to low total core integrity early on).

By the end game, your main storage sources are
1) Stockpiles (rare).
2) Conveyors (you best bet, but still rare).
3) Collectors (fairly rare too).

So, storage pressure adds to the difficulty of the game. I don't know if it's intended (you don't use much storage yourself), but it's an important effect for me (maybe 40% of the impact of the alert level death spiral). Note, I'm fine with that.
