In addition to "alpha supporter" badge there has to be "α1 Winner" badge. There is even a recipient for it.

Quantification is important in my books. I can support something like 'You Are Winrar' because it's easy to define when someone has won, but 'Hacker Extraordinaire' and such are harder. Why not just use the personal line on your profile? Heck, you could even take it to the next level and change your icon to that of the Decryption Engine (an in-game item that increases hacking success by 25%!).

I do plan to use the badge system to award various achievements, but we don't want to let it get out of hand. It needs to be somewhat systematic and we're not quite there yet. More badge opportunities have been planned for official tournaments.

I already did think about doing something for biomatter, but we'll have to wait a bit on that. I do like the idea of identifying confirmed winners.

Brilliant Idea (that takes far too much work for infinitesimal benefit, of course!): When you win, you're given a badge code... thingy... that lets you get a forum medal for having reached the surface.

A great incentive for joining us on the forums, if nothing else. ;)
