General Discussion / Re: Congrats on the (imminent) Steam release!

Steam is a duel edged weapon.
(Can I attach that?)

Yeah, the updating is ASAP and on a well done network. You don't sit around waiting for your game.
What killed Good Old etc for me was a delay of more than a month to get an update and then to have that update segregate Steam players from the rest of the world.

Congratulations on your Steam debut.
And quite a fine game too.

Ideas / I Hear Doors, Shots, But Not Other Bots?
« on: October 22, 2017, 11:10:26 PM »
I understand some bots would be equipped for stealth, but I lean towards an auditory clue as to what is moving in the immediate vicinity.

Would it make the game too easy? I am not at all for that.\ if you feel that would be the result.

I just thought the immersion factor would increase as I would strain to hear what lies around the corner. And then there is the ability to discern an innocuous bot from an active enemy. Treads sound like treads no matter what they are attached to.
But maybe the other attachments have their own sounds?

I also realize this would be a ton of work, so I ask.

Late to the discussion but I really dig the tile set.
Call it atmospheric.

Strategies / Re: To Evolve or to Explore?

Doesn't it depend on what you're presented with?
Empty? Run up the stairs.

Lots of goodies, stick around and hunt.
Allow me to edit and add, I was down to 90 in my Core, no matter etc. I felt great making the stairs.

General Discussion / Re: Improving the Tutorial for New Players
« on: October 22, 2017, 01:57:30 PM »
I am a new player.

I really like that there is no hand holding. Other Roguelikes get you invested in your character to the point you get increasingly frustrated when you die.
(Telegard - rolling up a character for half and hour and then die on level 2)

In this, I am invested in the game - I want out...not invested in the vehicle getting me out.
I am more interested in discovering how it works as I go, taking that fog away would diminish the investment greatly.
I am invested in reading data sheets on the items I find.

For 99% of the games I own (I have owned a computer since 1979 - trash80) I need and want a tutorial.
This is the exception to the rule. I think "help" would take away a great part of the fun I have with this.

I am actively avoiding guides that are listing all the items available. I want to find them myself and have that "OoOoOoOoO" moment as I figure out what to do with this newly found part.

The ONLY portion that needs to be explained are the controls - what key do I press to...

General Discussion / Re: Music for Cogmind?

Unless it would be as good as say System Shock etc I would rather not.

I like the ambient noises that different machinery generates. Sometimes it adds to the tension by an order of magnitude.
(Do scouts & mercs make noise when patrolling? Perhaps they should?)

I just got the game and have fallen head first. This is great.

Back to topic - a lot of work and there will be a wide array of preferences. I suspect more would be turning it off than utilizing it.
Little flourishes might be workable. The short 5 note riff or a sound when a particular action is triggered.
Combat - dun dun dun
Finding something special - tinkling
Running away

In each case you could write something very simple that works without having to writing or licensing complete songs.
