General Discussion / Re: Cogmind, some advices
« on: September 22, 2016, 03:01:41 PM »
Nice ok ! I will (re) play in the near future, thanks. I'm in an ADOM-play frenzy for some weeks now : didn't get far in the game (at all) but it is super fun and -omg- hard, especially when you try not to be spoiled... :'( :-X Soooo this frenzy can take a while before I play Cogmind again  :P

General Discussion / Cogmind, some advices
« on: September 18, 2016, 11:06:16 AM »
Hello all,

After a long while when I didn't play Cogmind at all, despite having played it at the beginning of the alpha, I think it's time to replay it in the near future ! The only problem is that many versions has come by and I suppose many things have changed. So I wanted to ask you : what are general advices you can give me to not die after 10 min of play? What are the most apparent changes since version 0.5/0.6 (and the most useful ones to know!)?

In a nutshell : help me รด great cogminds !

I know, as I said, I haven't finished a game since Alpha 3 tournament edition but I have one pending where I intend to go as far as I can. I'm currently at -6 and going for a really heavy build (threads+ much weapons+ much armor+ much everything). I want to blow up sh***.

I personally have an horrible disease : I play too much games at the same time at any given moment. Consequently, I have trouble concentrating on one game to finish it fair and square. This disease extends too to roguelikes : currently, I'm trying to limit myself to play "only" Cogmind, ADOM and Caves of Qud. It's hard and I switch frequently and way too much. As an exemple, since Alpha 3 of Cogmind (beginning of the tournament), I haven't been able to finish a single game of Cogmind as I switch between games too much...Of course, I don't play just roguelikes so it's even worse.

In conclusion, I'm really good at handling game switches but it's really a bad thing for me...

Help me  :'(

at least if you'd like to get really far ;)

I want yes... But the clock of the forum is -7 hours from my time, I played this seed on the beginning of the afternoon and I posted right after.
I think that in fact, I need to play more, more carefully and plan a bit better.

Pfeuh. I'm feeling as if I was the first time I play the game, I don't understand.

EDIT : I didn't want to get spoiled before, but now I think I don't care reading all the wiki and the forum to get tips. I'm a bit ashamed of it but hey.

I have the feeling that Alpha 2 is more difficult that Alpha 1 or is it just an impression?

I reached once dlvl -3 on Alpha 1 and I got regularly to -6/-4 but here... Maybe it's because I don't play much these days but damn.

Ok, I'm officially bad at this game.

I looked at the calculations, and here's what I found:

To simplify the system (and the player benefits from this as well, except for it being not so obvious to understand), the formula combines values for all active propulsion at each stage of the process. Therefore, you have

1) a total time/move of 30+30+35+30 = 125
2) a total of 4 propulsion units: 125 / 4 = 31.25
3) a total modifier of -10 + -5 + -10 = -25
4) a final speed of 31.25 + -25 = 6.25

It's not a perfect system and does some strange things at certain points that I still want to look into, but now you know why you're moving faster than you think you should be =p

This is high magic, known only to the strongest of wizards.

I have to agree to the fact that everything in the UI is not absolutely clear at first sight.

But hey, it's like love : it may not be obvious at the beginning but it comes with time  8)

AHAH I had a secret achievement   ;D ;D ;D

Jimmijamjams, one day you'll reveal how you make up these achievements !

EDIT : I'll upload my score here when it's ready

Even if camtasia seems to work, I'll try OBS, juste because and going for your settings to see what I can do.

Well you're putting some pressure on me  ;D

Just out of curiosity, what are you studying?

Hey, I didn't realise you were roguelikefr!  I've been subbed to you for a while and I watch a few of your videos (my french is very basic, but I do like your vids!).  I've already watched this video and gave it a thumbs up a month ago, you do a great job of explaining the game :)

Wow, I didn't know that, thanks a lot ! We're in fact a (very) small community : we mainly have a forum, a twitter and the youtube channel (and a blog but it hasn't been updated for quite some time). Many, many vids aren't from me (this one is!) but it's good to hear that people that are not totally french-speaker can enjoy the videos! Drop a comment on the videos or take a look at the forum sometimes ! Don't let the name roguelike.FR fools you : we're always happy to speak with anyone regardless of one's french mastery ahah

(If you want to improve your french -hey, we never know!- go to this subreddit(https://fr.reddit.com/r/French/), I used to hang out there like a year and a half ago and tried to help people sometimes^^)

I'm surprised that you can actually understand my ramblings in the video, my sound is quite low and I'm hesitating a lot as I speak...It would be awful to hear if I spoke in english  ;D.

And nope, I don't use OBS but Camtasia studio! I just downloaded OBS this afternoon out of curiosity so I see what you mean with these settings. The major problem with camtasia is that it doesn't capture ... full screen applications >_< It is really easy to record then to cut and make something watchable in minutes but that is a major issue. So I record my entire screen with it (windowed mode set to my resolution) but it's far from perfect.

EDIT : After writing this, I tested Cogmind recorded in fullscreen with camtasia, and it seems to work... So forget about the previous paragraph. I don't know why it works...

I had this problem with OBS : when you select "sources" and go for "game capture", the screen just stays black and Cogmind doesn't appear in the recording. I don't know why you can't select in the properties but I see that you use "monitor capture" so I guess I'll use the same...

I plan to make more videos of Cogmind as I really like the game and want it to be more recognized, that's why I want the videos to be prettier. Maybe I'll be recording weekly seeds or tournaments when it'll happen.

Then again, I really like your videos  :)

20
Hoy, Jimmijamsjams, I would like to know what is your recording software for the Cogmind videos and how do you configure it? I made a video of Cogmind a month ago (on youtube if you're interested ), but I wasn't satisfied with the overall quality. I'm pretty new to video stuff so specialized vocabulary kind of repulse me ahah

So how do you do it, in a simple way  ;)

Yeah, it was a really difficult seed in the beginning for me as well.

I'm sad now  :-X

Ok, this time I'in, fo' real! Just have to take the time...

EDIT : Ok, I sucked really hard, I don't know why but I rapidly got swarmed by -10, great beginning. Then I desperately ran for the stairs and it was the Mines. 2 more grunts spawned just by the stairs et I got again swarmed by pest/mercenaries... and wrecked. I don't think I made anything but run :'/

As I'm being super honest/do not cheat, here is my score :

I really shouldn't have begun the seed at 4am...
Now I'm just waiting for next week fo' revenge  >:(

General Discussion / Re: Tiles Mode
« on: June 11, 2015, 01:50:40 AM »
I personally use ASCII-mode only. For no reasons, I can't distinguish fast enough shapes in tiles because what stand the most at first sight for me is colors, then symbols. I don't know why but I struggle (relatively speaking, it takes like 2 seconds more) to tell the difference between two items/enemies of the same color than in ASCII-mode...
